Situated on the junction of the Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon is the third largest city in France and sits northwest of the French Alps and 391 kilometres southeast of Paris. It’s the capital of the Rhône département and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alps region and is arguably the country’s gastronomical capital boasting an impressive collection of markets, food courts, and restaurants.
Vieux Lyon is the original medieval city and is an area recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. It sits on the west bank of the Saône river and offers visitors a tapestry of charming old houses and narrow alleyways to explore on foot.
But if there is one thing you ‘must do’ while in Lyon, it’s visit one of the city’s many “bouchons” (traditional restaurants). There is one thing that locals in Lyon hate, and that is being disappointed by a restaurant. So be sure to look for the “Bouchon Lyonnais” quality label or visit the Only Lyon website to find the perfect place to eat.
If you want to get out and explore everything the city has to offer, grab yourself a Lyon City Card to get free admission into major attractions, free public transport, a guided tour and discounts on many other activities and shopping. Enjoy one, two, three or four days! Visit Lyon City Card to purchase your card.
The “Nuits de Fourvière” is an annual festival of theatre, circus, music, dance, and film and takes place in June/July. Why not stay a little longer in longer in Lyon and take in a show? Tickets are available at the Nuits de Fourvière website.
